Caption: Baylor’s School of Medicine hosted its annual Family Day on Aug. 13. The day included breakfast in Rayzor Lounge, speakers in Cullen Auditorium and tours of main Baylor and the DeBakey Library and Museum. The program lets families hear about the environment where their students will be trained and to give ideas on how to best support them on the medical school journey.

Faculty Kudos

Dr. Yohannes Ghebre, associate professor of radiation oncology, is a finalist for the CureAccelerator Live! for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Competition. Four finalists will present their clinical repurposing research trials to community members representing industry, research, medicine, philanthropy and patient groups. The winning trial will be selected by attendees to receive a grant that supports a $70,000 clinical trial. Ghebre will present his work on a new use of the antacid drug esomeprazole to treat morphea, a chronic connective tissue disease.

Dr. Sanghamitra Moulik Misra, professor of pediatrics, represented Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital as chair-elect at the American Academy of Pediatrics Leadership Conference in early August.

Coming Up

Be the Match: Black Americans have only a 29% chance of finding a matching marrow transplant, and less than half of Asian/Pacific Islander and Latino patients will find their match. Visit the Be the Match table in the E-Hallway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 22 to learn more about the organization and whether becoming a donor is for you.

Annual compliance education: The FY ’23 annual compliance education will be assigned in SuccessFactors to all Baylor faculty, residents, staff and students, on Aug. 22. This year’s topic will focus on privacy and security. This year, providers will receive CME Ethics Credit for completing the training. This activity is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.

TMC Orchestra: The award-winning Texas Medical Center Orchestra returns to the Miller Outdoor Theatre stage at 8:15 p.m. Aug. 27 for its 22nd season with a performance, La Zarzuela Vive!. TMCO members will present a selection of orchestral and solo pieces in a salute to the art of zarzuela — the Spanish-language light operettas. TMC orchestra will be joined by the International Voices Houston choir and feature Houston Grand Opera tenor Ricardo Garcia and soprano Jimena Montserrat. Excerpts include energetic march and dance music as well as ballads in genres from pasodobles, seguidillas, habaneras and jota from the operatic masterpieces of Spanish-speaking composers such as José Serrano, Pablo Luna, Augustin Lara, Amadeo Vives and Tomás Bretón.

Faculty Senate constitution: Current faculty members are asked to cast their vote to approve the proposed amendments to the Faculty Senate Constitution. View the proposed constitution amendments (executive summary). Deadline to vote is 11:59 p.m. Aug. 31.

A Guide to Academic Promotion: Faculty and Baylor staff are encouraged to view and use a new online resource, “Faculty Companion – A Guide to Academic Promotion,” on faculty appointments and the process for faculty promotion at the College. The guide provides an overview of faculty tracks, pathways to promotion on those tracks, helpful resources and links to FAP-related forms and materials. Monkeypox Vaccine Study: Baylor’s Vaccine Research Center is looking for volunteers to participate in a research study that will begin this fall for a monkeypox vaccine.
