Caption: Baylor’s top educational leaders were honored at Faculty Awards Day on May 19 in Cullen Auditorium. The awards include the Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism, presented to Dr. John H. Coverdale, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Other awards include the Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Award for Excellence in Education, along with Excellence in Patient Care awards honoring faculty across all points in their career, and more. See the list of winners.

Faculty Kudos

image Dr. Benjamin Frankfort, associate professor of ophthalmology and neuroscience, and Dr. Katherine King, associate professor of pediatrics-infectious disease, have been named co-directors of the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). Frankfort and King will assume leadership of the MSTP, an M.D./Ph.D. training program, which has been continuously funded by an NIH T32 training grant for 46 years, on July 1. Dr. Sharon Plon, the current director, will transition to her new role as assistant dean overseeing dual-degree and pathway programs for the School of Medicine.

From the Labs: Be sure to check out the newest display in A hallway of the Cullen Building featuring Image of the Month pictures selected the Baylor blog, From the Labs. All images were created and taken by Baylor researchers as they work to make new discoveries. We invite our research community to submit their research images and videos to From the Labs. The submissions will be considered for the Image or Video of the Month, in future hallway displays at main Baylor, the Baylor website and other projects.

Sequencing seminar: The Human Genome Sequencing Center will host a long-read sequencing seminar from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 27. Dr. Fritz Sedlazeck, associate professor at the Center, will be among the speakers showcasing their application of long-read sequencing technologies in diverse research areas. The virtual seminar will be focused on Oxford Nanopore Technologies. Register online.

Coming Up

Title IX session: At noon June 9, Baylor’s Title IX Office will host a question-and-answer session for community members to ask questions related to Title IX protocol. June’s topic will be bystander intervention. Join the meeting.

Research Investigator Spring Learning Series: The inaugural Research Investigator Spring Learning Series on Engagement, Communication and Education sponsored by the Baylor College of Medicine Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC) will be at noon June 15. Dr. Veronica B. Ajewole from Texas Southern University and Houston Methodist Hospital will give a virtual lecture, “Community engagement across the spectrum of biomedical science: Is this possible?” Register to attend.

Faculty Opportunities

ACGME Clinical Learning Environment: The Office of Graduate Medical Education is seeking faculty, resident and fellow facilitators for ACGME Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Program orientation. There will be two sessions per orientation day to serve as a facilitator. The sessions will be Patient Safety and Quality Improvement from 9:15 a.m. to 10:05 a.m. and Professionalism and Supervision from 10:15 to 11:05 a.m. on June 23, June 30, July 8 and July 29. If you are interested in the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement session for any or all four of the dates, email Dr. Sara Andrabi at sara.andrabi@bcm.edu with your name and specialty. If you are interested in the Professionalism and Supervision sessions, email Dr. Anoop Agrawal at anoopa@bcm.edu with your name and specialty.

Carl E. Fasser Visionary Leadership Award: This award was established in honor of Carl Fasser for his sustained demonstration of visionary leadership toward the physician assistant profession through education, research, clinical practice and service. The award is given annually to a Baylor physician assistant or program alumnus who demonstrates exceptional leadership in these same domains. Nomination applications are available. Following the nomination deadline, the awards committee will contact the nominee for further information, including a CV and letter of recommendation. Deadline for nominations is July 1.

Pediatric device teams: Do you have a pediatric device idea and want to work with an engineering team to build it? The Southwest National Pediatric Device Consortium has announced its annual call for engineering capstone team projects during the 2022-23 academic year. Texas Children’s and Baylor faculty and team members can partner with senior engineering design teams at Texas A&M’s School of Engineering or Rice University’s Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen for novel pediatric device development. Applications are due by 5 p.m. May 27 and must be submitted as a single PDF via Airtable. If you’re selected, expect an email in early August.
