Faculty Awards Day: Baylor College of Medicine recognized faculty leaders through its annual Faculty Awards Day, presented virtually this year as the College continues its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Watch the award video and read the commemorative program online.

The awards include the Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism, presented to Dr. Fareed Khan, associate professor and vice chair of community health in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and assistant chief of staff for the Harris Health System.

Clinical Care: Awards for Excellence in Patient Care recognized physicians in every stage of their careers, with Master Clinician Awards going to Drs. Juan Carlos Bernini, Murali Chintagumpala, ZoAnn Dreyer, Lefkothea Karaviti, Donald Mahoney Jr., and Kenneth McClain, professors of pediatrics; Drs. Prasad Manian and Dr. Waqar Quereshi, professors of medicine; Dr. Fernando Scaglia, professor of molecular & human genetics; Dr. Paul Sirbaugh, associate professor of pediatrics; Dr Connie Tran, associate professor of anesthesiology and a faculty senator; and Dr. Ashutosh Wali, professor of anesthesiology.

image Educational Excellence: Faculty Awards Day also served as the opportunity to honor the College’s top educational leaders with Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards, John P. McGovern Outstanding Teaching Awards and the Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education. The 2020 recipients of the Robertson Presidential Award are Dr. Gad Shaulsky, professor of molecular & human genetics, and Dr. Lynn Zechiedrich, professor and Kyle and Josephine Morrow Chair in molecular virology & microbiology.

Community Service: The Clark Faculty Service Award spotlights exemplary service to the College with professionalism. Recipients for 2020 are Dr. Liane Campbell, assistant professor of pediatrics in the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children’s Hospital; Dr. Clifford Dacso, professor of molecular & cellular biology; Elizabeth Elliott, PA-C, associate professor in the Physician Assistant Program in the School of Health Professions and a faculty senator; Susan Fernbach, B.S.N.; assistant professor of molecular & human genetics; Dr. Ricardo Flores, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology; and Dr. Asim Shah, professor of psychiatry & behavioral sciences.

Commencement 2020: Join the virtual commencement ceremony for graduating students in the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and School of Health Professions at 5:45 p.m. today, May 21. The ceremony will include live remarks from President Paul Klotman, College leaders and student representatives.

Baylor Holiday: The College observes Memorial Day on Monday, May 28. The main campus (Cullen and surrounding buildings) will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. only to those who have prior permission from their mission leader to access the buildings.

Main Campus Hours: The main campus is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The symptom screeners are on duty from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. All employees must check in at a screening station before 5 p.m. to gain access through the Cullen main entrance and Garage 6.

  • On weekends, the main campus is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. only to those who have prior permission from their mission leader to access the buildings. Those without prior permission cannot enter. Only the Cullen main entrance will be open on weekends at this time.

Chief Residents' Lecture: Dr. Salvatore Mangione, associate professor and director of the History of Medicine Series at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, presents “Bugs & People: When Epidemics Change History” as the 47th annual Chief Residents’ Visiting Professor at 12:15 p.m. today, May 21, via Zoom, password: 041933.

Policy Research Day: The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy hosts Health and Science Policy Virtual Research Day on Wednesday, May 27, via Zoom. Highlights include more than 20 Baylor faculty speakers, a keynote address by Princeton historian Dr. Keith Wailoo, a special panel with two State Legislators, plus the poster session. The virtual event provides a unique opportunity to hear experts from multiple disciplines discuss some of society's biggest challenges, including firearm safety and a case study on COVID-19. Vaccine Volunteers: Healthcare workers who treat COVID-19 patients are needed for a clinical trial to determine if an existing TB vaccine may be effective for COVID-19. The BCG vaccine prevents tuberculosis and is one of the oldest vaccines still in clinical use. Researchers at Baylor and four other institutions around the country are working to find out if it also can work against COVID-19. If interested, email Dr. Andrew DiNardo or Sharon Harrison.

COVID-19 Research: Baylor's infectious diseases team continues to compile weekly newsletter updates of the latest published and pre-print research on COVID-19 from around the world. Each newsletter also includes the latest stats on cases locally and in Texas. Read more.

Research Certificate: The Clinical Scientist Training Program offers a one-year program leading to a Certificate of Added Qualification in clinical investigation. The CAQ is designed for academic clinicians who are interested in an in-depth introduction to clinical research and grant writing but cannot commit to the additional years required to obtain a graduate degree. Participants learn how to develop a rigorous grant proposal and complete a K-23 or similar mentored career award proposal in the yearlong program. More information is available on the CSTP admissions page. Applications are due June 1.

Admissions Interviews: Applications are open for the School of Medicine Admissions Interviewing Subcommittees, charged with interviewing and evaluating applicants with varied backgrounds, values, beliefs, interests, experiences and cultural viewpoints to ensure a diverse student body. Faculty members, fellows, residents and Baylor alumni are eligible to apply. Please see Faculty Opportunities for more information and apply by June 26.

Fasser PA Award: Nominations are sought for the Carl E. Fasser Visionary Leadership Award, established in honor of Carl Fasser, professor and founding director of the Physician Assistant Program, for his sustained demonstration of visionary leadership. PA program alumni and Baylor physician assistants who demonstrate leadership in one or more of the following domains: research, education, clinical practice, administrative and service are eligible. DOI Update: Are you still receiving reminders about your 2019 Annual Financial Disclosure? That means the Office of Compliance has not received yours yet. If you previously entered "Financial Disclosures" but have not completed the “Annual Financial Disclosure,” which is a separate workflow, please log into the DOI Portal to "review," "affirm" and "submit" everything previously entered as accurate and complete. This closes out all 2019 reporting. Training materials are available on the DOI webpage, including a list of department representatives who can offer assistance ahead of the Sunday, May 31, deadline.
