Caption: Dr. Hoda Badr, an associate professor of medicine in epidemiology and population sciences in the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, received a research grant as part of the NIH-funded Texas Community Engagement Alliance (TX CEAL) consortium to conduct research and outreach efforts to help reduce the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations. She and the Baylor CEAL team that she leads decided to focus on the Aldine area because it is home to a large Latino community that has been particularly hard hit by COVID-19 cases and vaccination rates there remain low. Faculty Kudos

Dr. Maimuna Paul received a prestigious competitive postdoctoral fellowship from the National Ataxia Foundation for her work, "Molecular and cellular mechanisms in EBF3-related cerebellar ataxias and neurodevelopmental disorders." The announcement was made April 18. Paul is a fellow in the lab of Dr. Hsiao-Tuan Chao.

Texas Children's Hospital/Baylor Pediatric Cardiovascular Anesthesiology Fellowship has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, starting July 1. This is a new 12-month ACGME Fellowship, and Texas Children's, under the direction of fellowship program director Dr. Premal Trivedi, is in the first group to be accredited. For the 2022-23 academic year, new ACGME cardiovascular fellows include Drs. Manoj Sekar, Monserrat Fontanals and Liam Sullivan.

Vaccine Industry Excellence Awards: The team of scientists from Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development at Baylor led by Dr. Peter Hotez and Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi received the Best Academic Research Team Award at the Vaccine Industry Excellence Awards Ceremony & Dinner, hosted by the World Vaccine Congress Washington. Their award was in recognition of their dedication and effort in the development of the COVID-19 vaccine and that is currently being administered in India. The event was held April 19.

Sound of Well-Being: BCM BeWell and BCM LIFE will collaborate with the Center of Professionalism and the Texas Medical Center Orchestra to bring a series of musically inspired presentations on April 27. Each week, presenters aim to take you on a musical journey of well-being through a session titled "Peter and the Winds." Register for more details. Email wellness@bcm.edu for more information.

Alumni reunion: The 2022 Baylor College of Medicine Virtual Alumni Reunion will be April 21-22. The theme for the reunion and awards ceremony will be "What a Journey!" to reflect Baylor's 120-year history. The virtual event enables alumni to reconnect safely with each other and share exciting developments in the mission areas of healthcare, research, education and community. Register online to gain access to 20 live sessions, including many that offer complimentary CME and MOC credits.

Walk to Cure Arthritis: Join the Baylor team for the Walk to Cure Arthritis at 9 a.m. May 14 at Buffalo Bayou Trail. Baylor's Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team is a sponsor of this year's event. You can donate to the team if you are unable to join.

Faculty Opportunities

Faculty Senate Elections: Baylor's Faculty Senate is the primary venue for faculty participation in shared governance and planning at the College. Education, faculty affairs and benefits, strategic planning, communications and public affairs, and administrative operations are the subjects of the senate's standing committees. The 2022 Faculty Senate Elections are approaching. Faculty must self-nominate to run for a senate seat. Please refer to the Faculty Senate Elections page for process and eligibility.

M.D. Promotions Committee: Nominations are open for membership on the M.D. Committee for Student Promotion and Academic Achievement (also known as the M.D. Promotions committee). This peer-review committee is charged with reviewing the academic and professional progress of each medical student. Committee meetings are held 10 times each year on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. at the end of each grading period. Occasional ad hoc work is requested. At-large members are elected from faculty based on their sustained interest and active participation in undergraduate medical education and should not hold a current SOM senior administrative position. Nominations should include a brief personal statement summarizing your interest in the committee and your CV; send these materials to Yvette.Pinales@bcm.edu no later than June 1. Position will be announced on or before June 15, and the first meeting will be July 12.

From the Labs: Baylor's basic science research blog, From the Labs, invites our research community to submit their research images and videos. The submissions will be considered for posting in From the Labs as the Image/Video of the Month, in our mini gallery on display at main Baylor, Baylor web pages and other projects. The blog spotlights the newest and most interesting research work from the bench at the College to the Baylor community and beyond. For more details, visit the Call for Submissions.

Breast cancer continuing education: Register for "Updates on Advanced Breast Cancer: Local Management and Other New Perspectives," an educational activity hosted by Baylor and MD Anderson Cancer Center on May 13 and May 14Dr. Bora Lim, associate professor of medicine – oncology in the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, will serve as co-course director. The event is open to physicians, healthcare professionals, trainees and patients. The event will be virtual and in person at the Marriott Medical Center Hotel Houston, 6580 Fannin St. CME credit is available. Learn more and register to attend here.

Kids' Meals volunteers: The Baylor community participated in outreach activities for Kids' Meals, Inc., an organization that provides meals for children in need in the Houston area. See our volunteers in action in this video.
