Ask Me About My Research: Dr. Cheryl Walker, director of the Center for Precision Environmental Health, talks with Noorhan Al-Juboory, BCM Biotech Academy at Rusk, about why it is important for scientists and researchers to talk to others about their research in this episode of Ask Me About My Research. U.S. News Rankings: The 2020-2021 U.S. News & World Report annual list of top graduate schools was released March 17. In the research-intensive category, Baylor College of Medicine remains among the top 25 medical schools of the 152 medical schools in the nation at 22nd, and in the primary care category, at 4th. These rankings place Baylor in the top 15% of all U.S. medical schools.

  • The College is ranked nationally in five specialty programs: Pediatrics, 6th; Obstetrics & Gynecology, 13th; Surgery, 13th; Family Medicine, 15th; and Internal Medicine, 24th. U.S. News & World Report did not conduct new surveys for Baylor’s other degree-granting programs. The Graduate School remains ranked 26th in the biological sciences, physician assistant program is third and the doctor of nursing practice – nurse anesthesia program is second in the nation.

Coronavirus Update: As you know, Baylor’s Incident Command Center is emailing updates on the COVID-19 pandemic daily to all faculty, staff, students and trainees. The Coronavirus Preparedness website archives this information and serves as the hub for guidance on campus restrictions, travel, clinical care requirements, learner policies and more. As the College adjusts to Zoom meetings and working from home, communication is what will keep the Baylor community connected. Faculty Kudos

Dr. Anitra Beasley, assistant professor of obstetrics & gynecology, is featured in “Growing Up Baylor” on the Baylor blog, Momentum. Read how she first encountered the College on a field trip and joined the SMART program as a summer student before attending medical school and completing a residency at Baylor.

Dr. Richard Danielson, associate professor of otolaryngology and manager of audiology and hearing conservation at NASA's Johnson Space Center, was awarded the Safe-in-Sound Award for Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention for his work on the Acoustics Sub-Working Group of the International Space Station's Multilateral Medical Operations Panel. The award was presented at the recent annual conference of the National Hearing Conservation Association.

Dr. Ourania Preventza, professor of surgery, was named associate editor of Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: A Comparative Atlas, one of the official journals of the Association for Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Margot Williams, assistant professor of molecular & cellular biology in the Center for Precision Environmental Health, has received the Chi-Bin Chien Young Investigator of the Year Award from the International Zebrafish Society. The award recognizes recently appointed faculty members, grad students and trainees for significant contributions to the field.

Faculty Resources

NRF Awards: The Office of Faculty Development has decided to cancel the spring Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Award review cycle, which had an original due date of March 23. The updated deadline for the submission of educational portfolios is July 13. If you already have submitted your portfolio for consideration, you need not resubmit it to the Office of Faculty Development; however, if you wish to continue work on your portfolio, please feel free to submit an updated version on or before July 13. Please contact the Office of Faculty Development with any questions or concerns.

TMC Library: The TMC Library is closed but librarians are available through chat and email via the library’s website. Send questions via email, chat or text during regular reference service hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Research guides on different topics can be accessed online. Librarians Amy Sisson and Lara Ouellette can provide virtual help with access issues, literature searches, consultations and other questions.

DOI Update: Have you submitted your 2019 Annual Financial Disclosure through the DOI Portal yet? If you previously entered "Financial Disclosures" but have not completed the “Annual Financial Disclosure,” which is a separate workflow, please log into the portal to "review," "affirm" and "submit" everything previously entered as accurate and complete. This closes out all 2019 reporting. Training materials are available on the DOI webpage, including a list of department representatives who can offer assistance ahead of the Tuesday, March 31, deadline.

SWPDC Grants: Pediatric Device Seed Grant Awards are now open for submissions by Baylor faculty members. The Southwest National Pediatric Device Innovation Consortium supports this program to promote the innovation and development of devices specifically designed for children. Four awards of $25,000 each are available for use in fiscal year 2021. Please see the application form and FAQs for more information and submit your materials by 5 p.m. April 17.

Dunn Awards: The John S. Dunn Foundation Collaborative Research Award Program fosters new, exemplary inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional engagement in the quantitative biomedical sciences by providing research seed grants of up to $100,000 total to support research/preliminary work for two years with the goal that these exploratory, high-risk projects will be competitive for future peer-reviewed funding. Funds will be awarded to new collaborative teams in which the PI and Co-PI are from different Gulf Coast Consortium member institutions. Pre-proposals are due by midnight April 30.
