NCI Cancer Centers in Texas

Baylor College of Medicine is now one of 63 institutions in the country designated as a cancer center by the National Cancer Institute.

BCM is the second NCI-designated cancer center in Houston. M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the top-ranked cancer center in the world, carries an NCI-comprehensive cancer center designation.

BCM has collaborated with M.D. Anderson on many projects and that relationship continues to strengthen. Two years ago, BCM and M.D. Anderson announced that the two institutions would share a chair of neurosurgery, the first such joint appointment.

There is one other NCI-designated cancer center in Texas: The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine

The Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center is a collaboration of scientists and physicians, and a consortium of institutions.

Four of BCM's affiliated hospitals play key roles in the Duncan Cancer Center – the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Texas Children's Hospital, Ben Taub General Hospital and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital.

Through the consortium, the Duncan Cancer Center cares for adults, children, the indigent and U.S. veterans.

The mission of the Duncan Cancer Center is to provide exceptional patient care; outstanding education for students; innovative research into the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer; and community outreach and education, especially to the underserved.

More than 270 individuals, representing 28 different BCM departments and centers, comprise the Duncan Cancer Center.

More than 100,000 square feet is currently dedicated to cancer research at BCM, and additional space has been set aside in the new Alkek Research Tower at BCM, set to open later this year.

Cancer will be one of the major patient care service areas at the new Baylor Clinic and Hospital, which will open in 2010. Groundbreaking is this summer.

BCM has about $100 million per year in cancer-related research funding with $37.8 million from the National Cancer Institute.

BCM sees more than 4,000 new cancer patients a year across the consortium, the second highest volume for any institution in Texas.

The patient numbers represent about 25 percent of cancer cases in greater Houston and 90 percent of pediatric cancer care in the Houston area at Texas Children's Cancer Center.
