Biographical sketches of featured experts:
Roberta Anding is an instructor in the adolescent and sports medicine, department of pediatrics, at Baylor College of Medicine. Anding's research interests include early detection and prevention of Type 2 diabetes in the adolescent population and risk factors and incidence of eating disorders in female athletes and other high-risk populations. She is currently the American Dietetic Association's Houston spokesperson and a nutrition consultant for the Houston Texans Football team.
Dr. Steven Abrams is a professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and a researcher at the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center. Abrams' research focuses on the evaluation of growing infants and children and their need for nutritionally important minerals.
Dr. Cheryl Anderson is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and a researcher at the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center. Anderson's research focuses on how adults and adolescents perceive themselves athletically. Her research hopes to answer questions pertaining to athletic self-identity and what factors influence change in the athletic identity.
Patricia Pace, a registered dietitian, is an instructor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and a researcher in BCM's Behavioral Medicine Research Center. Trained as a dietitian, she is an expert in behavioral studies. She has studied the effect of counseling on long term weight loss and weight maintenance.
Dr. Christie Ballantyne is a professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, clinical director of BCM's atherosclerosis and lipoprotein research program and director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center. Ballantyne's research focuses on the causes and prevention of atherosclerotic vascular disease, including studies on lipid-lowering drug therapy. He is also studying whether novel biomarkers might be useful in identifying individuals at high risk for cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
Dr. Peter Jones is an associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and medical director for weight management at Methodist Wellness Services. He specializes in the clinical management of plasma lipid disorders and has conducted numerous studies on the effects of drugs on lipid metabolism. Dr. Jones has extensive experience in assessing statins in lowering LDL cholesterol levels.
Molly Gee, a registered dietitian at Baylor College of Medicine, has more than 25 years experience in health/nutrition communications and the clinical management of obesity. She is a leader in the American Dietetic Association and received the ADA's Medallion award in 2004. She is the co-founder of the ADA's new Weight Management Dietetics Practice Group and is on the organization's Obesity Steering Committee.
