Mission

To provide exceptional patient care, outstanding education for students, innovative research into the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer, and community outreach and education, especially to the underserved.

  • Over 260 formal members
  • Members represent 28 different Baylor College of Medicine departments and centers
  • Members work in and at all BCM hospital affiliates
  • More than 100,000 square feet dedicated to cancer research
  • BCM has about $100 million per year in cancer-related research funding with about $40 million from the National Cancer Institute.
  • BCM had more NCI funding than two-thirds of the existing 61 NCI Centers of Excellence in FY 2004.
  • BCM ranks first in biological science by the National Science Foundation and 11th overall in NIH funding for 2005.
  • Ranked top in NIH research funding of all colleges and universities in Texas
  • BCM sees more than 5,000 new cancer patients a year across consortium, more than many existing NCI-Designated Cancer Centers and the second highest volume for any institution in Texas.
  • This represents about 25 percent of cancer cases in greater Houston and 90 percent of pediatric cancer care in the Houston area at Texas Children's Cancer Center.
