General Guidelines for Using the Logo

An institution's logo is its most powerful communication tool because it is seen by more people than any other form of communication. In today's competitive marketplace, it is critical that all Baylor College of Medicine communications are clearly associated through the proper use of the logo. All use of the logo should follow the guidelines established in the BCM Graphic Standards (internal access only). These standards were developed to ensure the logo is used to its best advantage in order to strengthen BCM's identity.

The logo can be provided electronically or in hard copy format. It may not be changed or altered in any way for any purpose. It is not to be combined with any additional graphics/images/logos to create a separate logo.

Anyone wishing to use the Baylor College of Medicine name and/or logo should obtain permission through the Office of Communications:

  • Individuals wishing to use the name/logo for the web should contact Lynn Foltin, Senior Director, Institutional Web Management, 713-798-3322.
  • All other requests should be made to Diane Fries, Senior Director, Creative Services, 713-798-4726.

Description of the Logo

The Baylor College of Medicine logo consists of two elements: the large initials (BCM) and the logotype (Baylor College of Medicine). There are two approved configurations of the logo:

  • the large letters BCM with "Baylor College of Medicine" in smaller text below the initials (stacked)
    Preferred BCM logo
  • the large letters BCM with "Baylor College of Medicine" to the right (horizontal)
    Alternative BCM logo

The configuration with text beneath the letters is the college-preferred branding style.

Logo Colors

The colors in the logo are:

  • Blue: hex #002266, RGB 0/34/102, Pantone PMS 281C
  • Burgundy: hex #662255, RGB 102/34/85, Pantone PMS 511C
  • Black: hex #000000, RGB 0/0/0
  • White: hex #FFFFFF, RGB 255/255/255

No other colors may be used for the logo, except for a monochrome reverse-out which requires prior approval from the Office of Communications.

Minimum Clearances and Size for the BCM Logo

Minimum clearances around the logo must be preserved. The minimum clearances on all sides are specified as 1/6 of the height of the logo. Thus, if the distance from the top of the initials to the bottom of the "f" is 120 pixels, the minimum clearance is 20 pixels on all 4 sides of the logo. The logos for download include the minimum clearances.

If you need to visually align the logo with another element on the web page, pixels may be removed from the graphic as long as the clearances are maintained.

The minimum size for the preferred configuration on the web, as shown above, is 132 pixels wide by 60 pixels high, plus 10 pixels minimum clearances on all sides, for a total size of 152 pixels by 80 pixels. (At smaller sizes the logo loses legibility.) The minimum size for the preferred configuration on printed materials is 7/8 inch.

Examples of Acceptable and Unacceptable Logo Clearances

ACCEPTABLE - Minimum logo clearances are met:

UNACCEPTABLE - There is not enough clearance between the logo and the top of the banner:
Banner with logo too close to top

UNACCEPTABLE -There is not enough clearance between the logo and the photo:

Logo Usage Restrictions

The logo is treated as a single unit. Neither element may be used by itself, and the units may not be rearranged nor used with any other elements.

The logo is to be used without any graphic filters (e.g., bevels, shading, and 3D effects) or animation. The college-designed and college-approved screen saver is the only permitted animation of the logo, and it may not be used on the web.

Although the new logo is based on a standard font, the letters have been changed to give it a unique appearance. Therefore, the logo cannot be recreated. You can download it here or obtain it from the Institutional Web Management group in the Office of Communications. No matter what size is used, the proportions should be maintained.

The logo is not to be used as a background or screened behind text, nor is it to be used as a small decorative element for other graphic pieces.

The logo should always be used on a background color which shows it to its best advantage. A white background is preferred, but light colors like light gray or light tan are acceptable. The logo should not be displayed as a small box in a larger field. Examples of unacceptable logo use are illustrated below.

A monochrome reverse-out (i.e., all white letters to be used on a dark background) may be permissible in some circumstances. Please contact Institutional Web Management for specifics.

Placement and Linking

BCM Public Internet Sites

The logo is to appear in the upper left portion of every page, and must link to the corporate homepage (www.bcm.edu). For sites created with the BCM content management system, this and many other format issues will be automatically addressed.

BCM Intranet Sites

Intranet sites are built with the college's content management system. Logo usage is handled automatically.

BCM Partnership Sites

Requirements vary for the BCM logo on partnership/collaboration sites. However, in all cases the BCM logo must be present on the homepage and must link to the corporate homepage (www.bcm.edu). Contact the Office of Communications for specifics on partnership sites. (Note: This also applies to sites that are hosted, as a courtesy, on any BCM server).
