Rotation Schedule
The following is the typical rotation schedule following the one-year general surgery internship.
First Year:
Residents spend four months each at The Methodist Hospital, Ben Taub General Hospital and the MEDVAMC hospital. This time is spent becoming familiar with neurological disease and operating techniques.

Second and Third Years:
Residents have increasing responsibility in surgical rotations at The Methodist Hospital, Ben Taub General Hospital and the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Four-month rotations in neurology and neuropathology are also performed during this time.

Fourth Year:
Residents complete a rotation in pediatric neurosurgery at Texas Children’s and a rotation as chief resident at the MEDVAMC with increased clinical and administrative responsibilities. A four-month block of time is also set aside for research or further exposure to a clinical subspecialty, such as spinal surgery and instrumentation or stereotactic surgery.

Fifth Year:
Residents complete two four-month rotations as chief resident at The
Methodist Hospital and one four-month rotation as chief resident at Ben
Taub. At this level, residents have major clinical and administrative
responsibilities including the supervision of senior and junior residents
and medical students, scheduling all activities of the services and organizing
the clinical and basic science material presented at conferences.
