Application Process
The Neurosurgery Residency Program is five years in duration, following a surgical internship. The program accepts three new residents each year.
The Neurosurgery Matching Program is used to match applicants with ranked program choices. Applicants who are matched into the Baylor Neurosurgery Residency Program are also matched into the Baylor Department of Surgery surgical internship and complete the 12-month internship prior to beginning residency.
The Neurosurgery Matching Program requires that applicants use the Central Application Service to apply by October 1 of the year prior to admission. Once the application is received, the Neurosurgery Residency Selection committee (program director and the faculty) selects approximately 50 applicants to interview.
Five two-day sessions are scheduled from October through January, with 8-10 applicants scheduled for each session.
Sessions begin at 7a.m. Friday with breakfast and an orientation to the
department, and continue through Saturday afternoon. Sessions include
interviews with the faculty and tours of the surgical, clinical, research
and academic facilities. Lunch and dinner meetings with the current neurosurgery
residents are also arranged.
Ranking of applicants is based on the following criteria:
- Demonstration, during medical school, of intellectual and clinical ability, evident by class standing, scores on the USMLE part I and II examinations and participation in research
- Evidence of emotional maturity and stability and a strong sense of responsibility
- Letters of recommendation
Notification of appointment into the program is made by the Matching
Program in the latter half of January.
