Academic Training

Academic facilities include multi-platform computer support, imaging equipment, multimedia equipment, two neurosurgical libraries, a biostatistics office and support for publications.

The academic program consists of a coordinated schedule of conferences and lectures in the basic and clinical neurosciences. A microvascular surgical laboratory and an anatomical dissection laboratory have also been developed for teaching surgical skills and neurosurgical anatomy. Residents gain experience in teaching, organizing and preparing manuscripts, and making presentations on neurosurgical and basic scientific topics.

The teaching and conference schedule is structured to involve resident and faculty participation and interaction. Regularly scheduled conferences include the following:

The Methodist Hospital Clinical Neurosurgery Conference:
In-depth case presentations by neurosurgery residents and guest lecturers. The emphasis of this conference is neurosurgical procedures, neuropathology and neuroradiology. Wednesdays at 7 a.m.

Affiliated Hospitals Clinical Neurosurgery Conference:
In-depth case presentations from Ben Taub, the MEDVAMC, Texas Children's and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center presented by neurosurgery residents and guest lecturers. Fridays at 7 a.m.

Neuro-oncology Adult Tumor Board:
In-depth presentations of adult neuro-oncology cases presented by faculty members specializing in neuro-oncology, neuropathology and neuroradiology. The last Wednesday of every month at 7 a.m.

Neurosurgery Research Conference:
Residents, faculty and staff presentations of ongoing research projects. Fridays at 8:30 a.m.

Journal Club:
Critical discussion of significant new journal articles. Fourth Wednesday of every other month at 6:30 p.m.

Resident Seminar:
Residents give comprehensive presentations on basic or clinical topics. Fourth Monday of every other month at 7 p.m.

Mortality and Morbidity Conference:
Presentations from affiliated hospitals. Fourth Saturday of every month at 10 a.m.

Houston Neurological Society:
The society is composed of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropathologists, neuroradiologists, neurophysiologists and other neuroscientists. Invited lecturers. Fourth Wednesday of every other month at 6 p.m.

The George Ehni Visiting Professorship, Lecture and Workshop:
Hands-on didactic surgical workshop and accompanying lecture presented by a visiting professor. Annual.
