Department of Neurosurgery
The Baylor College of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery was established in 1952 as a division of the Department of Surgery, and is currently ranked one of the top 11 neurosurgery programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
Part of the department’s success comes from its location in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in Houston, which has many benefits:
- TMC covers 740 acres, the largest medical center of its kind in the world
- 42 member institutions
- More than 100 permanent buildings
- In 2001, approximately 5.1 million patient visits were scheduled
- In 2001, more than $700 million was received for research by member institutions
- TMC facilities include 13 hospitals, two medical schools, four nursing schools, schools of dentistry, public health and pharmacy, a medical library and the area’s largest air emergency service
The Department of Neurosurgery has formal affiliations with six of the medical center’s hospitals, providing the department with some of the most advanced patient care facilities and physician training in the world:
- St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital
- Ben Taub General Hospital
- Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center
- Texas Children’s Hospital
- The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
- The Methodist Hospital
The department also has informal ties with many other TMC member institutions, which greatly enhance the clinical, research and academic resources available for neurosurgical patients, faculty, residents and researchers.
The full range of modern neurosurgical specialties and techniques is available at the hospitals affiliated with the department:
- Skull-base surgery
- Functional neurosurgery (stereotactic surgery, deep brain stimulation, epilepsy surgery, awake craniotomy with mapping of brain function)
- Craniofacial surgery
- Transsphenoidal surgery
- Spinal surgery
- Spinal instrumentation and reconstruction
- Pediatric neurosurgery
