Residency Program Overview

The residency program is of seven years duration, including an integrated internship year and a year of dedicated basic science or clinical research. Residents participate in all aspects of patient care and receive training in modern neurosurgical techniques. One of the great strengths of the Baylor College of Medicine program is that it is a large program that offers five distinctive hospital experiences. Residents are therefore exposed to the full range of neurosurgery, including vascular neurosurgery, epilepsy, endovascular, functional, trauma, transsphenoidal surgeries, spinal surgeries, peripheral nerve surgeries, stereotactic surgeries, and pediatric reconstructive surgeries.

Between July 1, 2005 and June 30, 2006, approximately 6,000 major neurosurgical procedures were performed by the neurosurgical program. Experience is gained in the department’s five affiliated hospitals: Ben Taub General Hospital (a Level 1 trauma center), Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. All are located in the Texas Medical Center.

The Neurological Surgery residency program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our graduates become leaders in neurosurgery, both in academics and private practice.

It is our commitment to train residents to become highly skilled, compassionate and ethical neurosurgeons who continue to learn new aspects of neurosurgery throughout their careers and contribute to the development of neurosurgery in academic and/or clinical positions.
