Research and Mentorship
Neurology residents select a career mentor and a research mentor from among faculty members. They are maintained for the length of training. Each resident meets with their life and career mentor on a regular basis to seek guidance in clinical patient care, learning strategies, and general life and career issues. A resident will work with the chosen research mentor on a particular research project and is expected to complete the project by the end of the residency.
Residents are expected to produce three publications during their training. These publications may take the form of journal articles of all types, posters at either regional or national meetings, or a Case-of-the-Month published on the BCM website.
The research work is presented at an annual research symposium. The best research work is given an award at the graduation ceremony. Grant proposal writing and future research fellowship can be planned during the senior residency years. Residents with a serious commitment and background in research may be eligible to apply for research training grants during residency.
