The Second and Third Years (PGY3 and PGY4)

During each of the second and third years of the adult neurology program, residents rotate for one to two months through each of five neurology services:

They supervise and assist first-year house officers on the wards, on consults, and in the outpatient clinics. While on the wards, upper-level residents round with the junior residents, provide clinical support, and teach the junior residents and students. Senior residents often evaluate patients in the emergency room during the day. In addition to managing the inpatient services, residents also are the consultation service chiefs at BTGH and the MEDVAMC.

There is rarely overnight in-house call for senior residents, however, they serve as supervisors for the care of the patients on their service, and therefore do take backup call from home on a regular basis. On some services, and especially early in the academic year, upper-level residents may come into the hospital to evaluate admissions as necessary for optimum patient care. On other services or times of year, upper-level residents or faculty may only need to provide over-the-phone backup.

Senior residents also spend three months on Child Neurology rotations. The Child Neurology experience includes two months on the Texas Children's Hospital inpatient consultation service and one month in the TCH outpatient neurology clinic. Please refer to the related section for further information.

Senior residents have approximately ten to eleven months of elective time. The electives may occur at the Baylor Clinic or any of our affiliated hospitals .
