Intern Year (PGY1)

The PGY1 residents rotate through four hospitals:

The first year of residency focuses mainly on training in Internal Medicine but also includes two months of neurology and one month of psychiatry. Residents must develop competency in managing general medical conditions critical to caring for patients with neurological problems. The internal medicine months include three months on medicine subspecialty electives at SLEH, one month in the BTGH Emergency Center, one month in either the BTGH or MEDVAMC Medical Intensive Care Unit, and four months on general medicine wards at both BTGH and MEDVAMC. On the internal medicine rotations, overnight calls are usually every 4-5 nights during the inpatient service months and every 6-7 nights during the subspecialty elective months. Upper level residents are always available in-house during night calls while on internal medicine.

Additionally, residents spend one month on Consult/Liaison Psychiatry at MEDVAMC, one month in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at SLEH (after the MICU rotation), and one month on the BCM general neurology consult service at TMH. The neurology and psychiatry months are virtually overnight call free.
