Conferences and Didactics
Dr. Mizrahi teaching the residents.
Conferences are given in a lecture or case discussion format. PGY1s attend the conferences of the service on which they are rotating. PGY2-4 residents attend the neurology lecture series. The details of conference schedules are shown in the following table. In addition to the conferences listed below, residents on the Ben Taub General Hospital / Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center outpatient rotation have five hours of additional didactics that focus on important outpatient topics. Residents have protected time to attend the mandatory conferences. Conferences are "mandatory" for the benefit of the residents in that each service must make accommodations for residents to attend. Meals are provided by the Department of Neurology at the mandatory lunchtime conferences.

Adult Neurology Grand Rounds(Mandatory)
Adult Neurology Grand Rounds are held every Monday at noon in the Blue Bird Auditorium of the Neurosensory Center. The faculty members and invited guests present lectures on recent advances in neurology.
Neurology Lecture Series(Mandatory)
Tuesday and Thursday lectures focus on specific fields of Neurology. Typically, 8-9 lectures on each particular field are delivered by the faculty members or invited experts. The power point slides and education materials are available online as educational resources for the residents. Some examples of lecture series topics include:
- Neuroanatomy
- Neurogenetics
- Epilepsy
- EEG
- Neuromuscular disease
- EMG
- Neurocritical care
- Stroke
- Neuroethics
- Infectious disease and neurology
- Movement disorders
- Dementia
- Behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry
- Neuro-oncology
- Psychiatry
- Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
- Neuro-ophthalmology
- Neuro-otology
- Multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating and autoimmune diseases of the CNS
- Women's issues in neurology
Child Neurology Grand Rounds(Mandatory)
Child Neurology Grand Rounds are held each Wednesday at noon at the Texas Children's Hospital Auditorium. These Grand Rounds cover various topics such as primary neurological disorders in children, neuropathology, neuroradiology, neurodevelopmental disorders, etc.
Professor Rounds(Mandatory)
Professor Rounds are on Wednesdays from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in the Blue Bird Library of the Neurosensory Center. Residents perform a history and physical exam on a patient who is unknown to them while being observed by one faculty member, along with residents and students. This is an excellent opportunity for residents to improve their history taking skills, neurological examination, and differential diagnosis skills.
Friday Noon Conferences(Mandatory)
Friday noon conferences change each week and include Behavioral Neurology/Neuropsychiatry, Morbidity & Mortality (M&M), Neuropathology, and a Stroke Journal Club. M&M is led by senior residents with cases from each hospital. An M&M committee of faculty and residents then develops educational strategies to improve patient care. Stroke journal club is presented by junior residents under the supervision of stroke and neurocritical care faculty. We discuss landmark and recent articles in the stroke literature. The last Friday of each month is set aside for lunch with the attendings. Each attending on-service takes residents out for lunch. This allows residents and faculty members to get to know eachother outside the hospital setting and for attendings to show their appreciation to the residents for their work.
Neuroradiology and Neuropathology Conferences(Mandatory)
Our neuroradiology and neuropathology conferences take place on Friday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. are designed to educate residents on the interpretation of neuroradiological and neuropathological studies. Lectures on the basics of neuroradiology are presented by neuroradiology faculty. Lectures on neuropathology are presented by neuropathology faculty. Once a month, two epilepsy faculty discuss EMU and EEG cases in relation to neuroimaging studies.
Movement Disorders Journal Club(Mandatory)
A Movement Disorders journal club is held monthly under the guidance of Dr. Joseph Jankovic and
Neuro-oncology Lecture Series
This conference is designed for neuro-oncology fellows in the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and all the residents are invited to attend. The conference is on Monday afternoon and is located in the M.D. Anderson faculty center.
Interventional Neuroradiology Conferences
Interventional neuroradiologists and neurocritical care attendings at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital meet every Tuesday to discuss interesting cases with a focus on neurovascular intervention.
Movement Disorders Video Rounds
Every Tuesday morning at the Baylor Clinic, movement disorders attending and fellows discuss interesting movement disorders cases and review video clips. Clinical phenomenology and differential diagnoses are discussed.
Epilepsy Surgery Conferences
Epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and neuropsychiatrists convene at this conference to discuss cases eligible for epilepsy surgery at Texas Children's and St. Luke's.
Neuropsychiatry Case Conference
Dr. Paul E. Schulz, his fellows, and neuropsychologists present interesting cases and discuss neuropsychiatric localization in the central nervous system. The neuropsychology of each case, neuroimaging, and any available neuropathology are discussed.
Multiple Sclerosis Case Conferences
Multiple sclerosis conferences are led by Dr. Victor M. Rivera and Dr. George J. Hutton along with their fellows to discuss various presentations of multiple sclerosis.
Stroke Morbidity and Mortality Conferences
The third Thursday evening of each month, stroke mortality and morbidity conferences are held in St. Luke's, with emphasis on stroke and intracranial hemorrhage cases.
Town Hall Meetings
The chair, program director, and neurology residents meet once every quarter to discuss the issues related to the neurology residency program, education, and recent updates in the department.
Local, National and International Conferences
Each year, the Department of Neurology at BCM organizes one national conferences, Current Neurology, in the fall and participates in the sponsorship of Epilepsy Update in the spring in association with the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas (EF).
Current Neurology is a two-day conference focusing on the recent advances in neurology. Epilepsy Update is organized by the faculty of the Baylor Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and is a symposium on epilepsy diagnosis, treatment, and psychosocial implications conducted in association with EF and other epilepsy groups in the region.
Neuropathology Review is a one-day course in spring that provides an extensive review of the pathology of the nervous system. The course is organized by Dr. Clay Goodman, Department of Pathology and Neurology at BCM and Dr. Greg Fuller, Department of Pathology at M.D. Anderson.
Neuroanatomy Review is a one-day course organized by the Department of Neurosurgery at BCM to help residents to review the most important topics in neuroanatomy.
