During the PGY3 and PGY4 years, there is almost no in-house call requirement. Upper level residents are responsible, however, for supervising PGY2s while they are on-call at Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Ben Taub General Hospital, but this supervisory call is from home. Particularly early in the year, upper level residents will go to a hospital to personally evaluate hospital admissions as is necessary for optimal patient care. Upper level residents also take home calls about every third night during two months on the Texas Children's Hospital consultation service. Upper level residents on the neuro-oncology service take home call every 4th-6th night.
The BCM Department of Neurology follows the guidelines of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education; residents do not work more than 80 hours per week averaged out over four weeks. They also have a 10 hour break between shifts. Every month there are at least four required duty free days. Duty hours are entered online on the E*Value system.
