Developmental Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology Postdoctoral Training in Clinical Research

This is a two-year training program for child neurologists or adult neurologists who are interested in brain development and epilepsy. The goal of the program is to train neurologists in the conduct of clinical research, using the tools of clinical neurophysiology, through an integrated curriculum of basic and clinical neuroscience.

The program will include didactic courses in neuroscience, biostatistics and study design; a basic neuroscience laboratory experience; training in aspects of clinical neurophysiology as they relate to specific research issues; the conduct of a mentored clinical research project; instruction in competitive grant writing, manuscript preparation and scientific presentation; and additional training in medical and surgical management of epilepsy in children. Training in clinical neurophysiology will include: electroencephalography (EEG), EEG-video monitoring, polysomnography, sensory evoked potentials (EP), intraoperative EEG and EP monitoring, electrocorticography, and electromyography. Training emphasis will be the application of these techniques in studying aspects of epilepsy in neonates, infants and children.

This training experience can lead to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology and by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, special qualification in Clinical Neurophysiology. This training program is funded by the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke, National Institutes of Health.
