Top 10 Science Autism Research Achievements of 2010
Each year Autism Speaks selects 10 significant advances in autism science from the many publications that emerged over the year. The staff and the Scientific Advisory Committee compile and vote on the Top 10. The research of Hsaio-Tuan Chao, Ph.D., New evidence for neuronal network imbalance in ASD, has been selected among these highlighted achievements. Tuan's publication can be found in Nature: Dysfunction in GABA signalling mediates autism-like stereotypies and Rett syndrome phenotypes.
Ryan Rochat's publication selected for Journal of Virology cover
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a large (200-nm diameter) double-stranded DNA virus. Structural determination of the portal, the complex responsible for packaging the viral genome in the HSV-1 capsid, has been unsuccessful because of limitations with conventional single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Using recent advances in electron optics and image reconstruction, Rochat, et al. (p. 1871-1874) have produced the first cryo-EM structure of the HSV-1 B capsid. The structure unambiguously reveals the location and stoichiometry of the portal complex, thereby resolving the current uncertainty over its true location and nature.
