Acceptance and Funding

The Bioengineering Program at Rice University attracted the attention of Chris Loo, who is working in the laboratory of Stanley C. Moore Assistant Professor Rebekah Drezek, Ph.D.

Baylor College of Medicine is one of 42 institutions awarded a competitive Medical Scientist Training Program grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant offers students funded medical and graduate education through the combined M.D./ Ph.D. Program. More than 80 students in various phases of training are currently supported by the M.D./ Ph.D. grant, institutional and endowment funds.

Admission is highly competitive, and selection is based on interviews, letters of recommendation, volunteer and extracurricular activities, demonstrable research interest and ability, MCAT scores, and GPA. Acceptance to the M.D./Ph.D. at BCM does not require separate application to the Graduate School, nor is application to a specific graduate department necessary upon entering the program. After admission to medical school is granted, the M.D./ Ph.D. Operating Committee recommends candidates to be considered for admission by the Graduate School. Students' credentials must be approved by the Medical School and Graduate School Admissions Committees before an M.D./ Ph.D. offer of acceptance can be made. In previous years, accepted applicants had average cumulative GPAs of 3.85, achieved average MCAT scores of 11.44 and had completed meritorious research experiences.

Applicants, who are accepted to the MSTP and maintain academic requirements, receive full tuition, medical insurance and stipend support throughout their training. Eight to twelve candidates are accepted annually. Additional financial aid can also be applied for during training.
