Summer Research Opportunitites for
Undergraduates & High School Seniors

Summer Medical and Research Training Program (SMART) for College Undergraduates

From its initiation in 1989, the SMART Program has provided students from more than 200 colleges and universities an opportunity to experience research in a nurturing environment. Between 80 and 90 positions are available each summer. The size of the program affords a unique chance to work closely with students from many different ethnic, educational and geographical backgrounds who share a common interest in biomedical science careers. Students come to Baylor for 10 weeks to gain research experience through work in a laboratory, and participate in many other activities designed to prepare one for the pursuit of a research career. A living stipend is paid. Any faculty member of the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology can sponsor a SMART student.

The Summer Science for Seniors (S3) Program for High School Seniors

The Graduate School sponsors a 10-week summer research program for local rising high school seniors. Students from any school in the Houston area are eligible for the program. Applicants must be high school juniors and at least 16 years old by June 1 of the year in which they participate. Twenty positions are available each summer. A limited number of positions are available for teachers. Participants conduct research in laboratories throughout the College. Any faculty member of the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology can sponsor a S3 student.
