Typical Program of Study
Below is an outline of the major activities in which a graduate student in the Program in Molecular Virology and Microbiology participates during the years of the program. This is a typical program, and each student is likely to have modifications of this program according to individual needs.
First Year

Coursework – didactic courses each term. Graded.
a) 2-3 courses each term (required or elective)
b) Seminar (attendance required)
c) Literature Reports (attendance/participation required -
Research Rotation – (assigned term 1, selected by student in subsequent terms)

Meetings with First Year Academic Advisory Committee – meet at end of each term to assess progress and select courses for coming term.

Select Thesis Advisor – at end of term 4 or during term 5.
Second Year

Select Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) – with advice from thesis advisor and program director.

Coursework – complete coursework plan as designed with advice from TAC.
a) Rarely more than one course per term.
b) Attend Seminar and participate in Literature Reports -
Research – begin thesis research project in laboratory of thesis advisor.

Biannual meetings with TAC – to discuss status and progress of research.
a) Submit meeting report to g raduate school and program director. -
Qualifying Exam – must be completed by end of 2nd year of residence.
Subsequent Years

Continue thesis research – under direction of thesis advisor and TAC.

Continue biannual meetings with TAC -- submission of reports to graduate school.

Attend Seminar and participate in Literature Reports.

Complete thesis research, write and defend thesis, receive Ph.D. degree
