Dr. DuPont’s major research goals are to define the epidemiology, immunology, clinical features, control, prevention and therapy of enteric infectious diseases. Basic science projects are performed as indicated to help fully answer larger questions suggested by field and laboratory research. Typically, laboratory techniques and procedures developed in our Houston laboratories are taken to the field in an international setting. Specific areas of research include: (1) pathogenesis of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli diarrhea with an emphasis on entero-toxigenic and enteroaggregative E. coli.; (2) intestinal immune response to enteric bacterial infection; (3) evaluation of novel antisecretory compounds and antimicrobial agents in the therapy of acute diarrhea; and (4) epidemiology of travelers’ diarrhea.
