Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the lab located?
The Integrated Microscopy Core is located within the 112A Cullen Suite at the end of the first floor of the main Baylor College of Medicine building. At the very back of the suite, several rooms comprise the core, including 120A (EM), 123A (LM), 123AA (Office). In one of the few benefits to Tropical Storm Allison, the IMC was completely redesigned and renovated, and has a brand new digital Transmission Electron Microscope.

How do I access the equipment in the IMC?
All users must fill out an online Investigator/Project Profile form in which you will describe your project and the depth of your experience in microscopy. From your description we will help you determine which type of microscopy best suits your needs and then schedule training on the appropriate equipment. To maintain an appropriate level of support for user's projects, please fill out a different profile for EACH project. We'll eventually have this all 'online' as an interactive form, but, until then, your cooperation is appreciated.

How do I schedule a tutorial?
We will schedule a tutorial on a particular piece of equipment after you have filled out an Investigator/Project Profile form and your scope needs are ascertained. Tutorials are scheduled Monday through Friday.

How do I schedule use of a particular microscope?
After the initial training, the staff will show you how to use the online scheduler to sign up. You are only allowed 2.5 hours on a particular instrument each day. Special circumstances can be discussed and work-arounds are sometimes possible, as long as the user is flexible with regard to starting early or late.

How do I cancel or reschedule my appointment?
To avoid being charged, you must cancel or reschedule 12 hours in advance.

How can I have my samples processed for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)?
You must first fill out an Investigator/Project Profile form and meet with the staff to determine how best to proceed (generally in person, sometimes by phone or electronically). There are typically two options:

  • The core will completely process your sample(s) and provide files or prints for a fee, or
  • We will prep your samples and after you have been trained on the instrument, you can operate and take images of your sample(s) on the TEM. The new digital TEM is a breeze for anyone to operate and get instant, photo-quality digital images.

Can I use the microscopes after hours and on weekends?
Only users who are pre-approved (i.e., able to demonstrate complete independence on an instrument), are allowed access to the facilities during off-peak hours (before 8:30 a.m; after 7 p.m; weekends). Off-peak time charges are 50 percent less than the peak time charge, so you save your investigator some money. Also, as the facility continues to be increasingly busy, early or late hour access is a good way to ensure access.

How do I move my files?
The IMC policy is that all files are to be removed from the computer at the end of your scoping session. This is most easily done by saving your files onto a CD-ROM or PC-formatted ZIP disk, then taking the disk with you when you leave. Alternatively, network-savvy people can use their departmental servers for export.

If using the API Deltavision Deconvolution System, you may FTP your files to the Linux workstation to be deconvolved. Concise FTP instructions are found in the instructional packet handed out during tutorials.

How can I make dye-sublimation prints?
You will need to contact a member of the IMC staff in order to set up a printer account. After your account is set up, an IMC staff member will give you a short tutorial on proper usage and printing.

Where is the dye-sublimation printer located?
The dye-sublimation printer is located in room 123AA.

I have a question and I can't find Debra, Jeannie, Kalli or Dr. Mancini?
Given the many different rooms in the core area (1st floor, Cullen) and on the 8th floor (Mancini lab), they are probably in one or the other locations. Check a few different locales (LM room, 123A; EM Prep Room, 120A; EM Scope Room, 120AA; or the IMC office (123AA), or give Dr. Mancini a call (713-798-8952; 832 754 8080 cell).

How often will I get billed?
Bills are mailed out to each principal investigator at the end of every month.
