Mentor Guidelines
- The Mentor Program consists of 18 hours which includes meetings between mentors and students and writing of the report.
- Mentors are to meet regularly with students, quarterly (suggest occasional lunch meetings).
- Students are to discuss mentor guidelines and track requirements with mentors at the first meeting.
- For students doing research paper, the mentor is to:
- Help the student connect with other faculty members doing research in his/her area of interest.
- Work with other faculty members to advise the student as he/she creates his/her research plan, completes a research project and write-up.
- Mentor Recruitment/Matching:
- Mentor recruiting and matching is currently done by students.
- The BCM World Health group is building a mentor database on their website.
- Mentors are to be student selected beginning in 2005. Students may choose and contact mentors themselves.
Year 1 and Year 2
- Assign/choose mentor in year I or at the beginning of year II
- Help student to begin to define:
- International interests (regions, research, patient care, public health, type of organization for which the student would like to work etc.).
- Funding sources for travel, international electives, research.
- An outline and time frame for completing track requirements.
Year 3
- Help solidify elective plans.
- Assure that student has identified funding sources for study abroad and/or research project.
- Assure that student has made contacts and solidified plans for international clinical rotations.
- Discuss plans for postgraduate training.
- Make sure student is completing all track requirements.
Year 4
- Continue meeting; are track requirements being completed?
- Read and evaluate final report. The report should be a summary of the student's experience in international health while on the track, including his/her clinical experience abroad.

rolvera@bcm.tmc.edu to confirm that student has completed the mentoring process and final report. - Discuss plans for postgraduate training, vocational plans.
