Electives Abroad : General Information
Registering for an International Elective
International electives taken for credit follow the same registration process as enrollment for any other elective away from Baylor. Students must complete the following steps to receive credit from Baylor College of Medicine for Visiting Student (Away) Special Electives.
International Special Electives
- If the elective will be at an established educational institution, the student must make application to that institution and secure a written approval/acceptance letter from the institution.
- Complete a BCM Special Elective Application form. This form can be printed from the web or obtained from the Baylor Registrar's Office. Forward the special elective registration form and approval letter to the appropriate Departmental/Divisional Contact at Baylor for approval to participate and receive credit for the international elective experience.
- Return the signed Special Elective Application form along with a copy of student medical insurance card and immunization record to the Baylor Registrar to complete course registration. It is this step that certifies your enrollment and malpractice insurance coverage during the period you are participating in the elective.
- The Registrar's Office will:
- Provide a copy of the student's transcript
- Provide a letter of malpractice insurance coverage
- Provide a letter of enrollment verification/good standing
- Provide an evaluation form for completion by the instructor/mentor
- The documents provided by the Registrar's Office plus a copy of your insurance card and immunization record should be sent ahead if study is at an educational institution. This documentation should be carried with you when traveling.
- Upon completion of the away elective, the completed evaluation form must be returned to the Registrar's Office for you to receive credit for the elective.
International Special Electives at Non-educational Institutions
- If the elective will be at a facility other than an established educational institution or will be study/work with an individual physician, discuss the Special Elective assignment with the proposed faculty instructor/mentor and prepare a short synopsis of the course design. Secure written approval from the proposed instructor/mentor.
- Complete a Special Elective Application form. This form can be printed from the web or obtained from the Baylor Registrar’s Office. Attach to the Special Elective Application form the written synopsis and instructor’s/mentor’s approval and present these documents to the Dean of Student Affairs at Baylor for approval to take the elective.
- After receiving the Dean’s approval, forward the Special Elective Application, the synopsis, and instructor’s/mentor’s approval to the appropriate Departmental/Divisional Coordinators of Electives at Baylor for approval to participate in the special elective for credit.
- Return the signed Special Elective Application form to the Baylor Registrar to complete course registration. It is this step that certifies your enrollment and malpractice insurance coverage during the period you are participating in the elective.
Upon arrival at the elective site, confirm with the faculty instructor that he/she has an evaluation form to rate your performance and to award you a grade upon completion of the elective. If the instructor requires an evaluation form, one can be obtained and printed from the web or you can contact the Baylor Registrar’s Office at (713) 798-7766 to obtain a copy.
