Curriculum Courses

The following courses are required for the International Health Track and ASTMH Exam.

Year 1, Block 5
Overview of International Health - Elective 210-415A, Dr. Bob Parkerson Class meets two sessions per week for six weeks during block 5, usually at mid-day for one hour.

Year 2, Block 7
Readings in International Health - Elective 210-415B, Dr. Bob Parkerson
Class meets September - May in the evenings for two hours
Students are required to make a presentation and prepare a paper.

Students are assigned a mentor and begin one-on-one quarterly meetings. A paper will be required in the 4th year summarizing the student's International health experience.

Years 3-4
Intensive Course in Travel & Tropical Medicine, Elective 450-438G, Dr. Cinton White.

One month clinical elective abroad in a developing country (Must be in a
tropical medicine country to qualify for ASTMH Certification).

Four half-days of travel medicine at St. Luke's Hospital, Travel Medicine Clinic, at Kirby Glen, Joan Williams, RN, 832-355-8222

CD-Rom course in Tropical Disease, Topics in International Health. CDs are available for viewing in the Education Resource Center (ERC), DeBakey Building room M202 (CDs are not available for checkout) or from Dr. White.

City-Wide Infectious Disease Conference - four meetings. Conference
meets in the DeBakey Building, room M112 for one hour each Wednesday at noon.

Note: Students interested in ASTMH Certification must choose one of the Clinical electives below:

  • One month clinical rotation - Infectious Disease consult service at Ben Taub Hospital - Elective 450-538A, Dr. White, or
  • One month clinical rotation in Pediatric Infectious Disease at Texas Children's Hospital - Elective 520-505A, Dr. Wilking, or
  • One month clinical Immigrant Medicine elective at Casa Juan Diego Clinic - Elective 740-512 Dr. McColloster, or
  • One month clinical environmental and border health elective at University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, STEER (South Texas Environmental Education and Research)

NOTE: Students NOT interested in ASTMH Certification may choose to do a 20-30 page Research Paper in lieu of one of the clinical electives above. Please contact Dr. Clinton White for more information.
