Customize your Education: Specialized Tracks
Sofia Olivarez on how BCM students can personalize their educational experience: Transcript
In an effort to best meet the varying interests of our students, BCM offers several tracks for medical students to explore particular areas of medicine. Participants in these tracks can receive certifications in the following areas:
- Medical School Research Track
- International Health Track
- Care for the Underserved Track
- Geriatrics Track
- Medical Ethics Track
Medical School Research Track
For medical students who desire increased exposure to basic, translational, or clinical research, this program allows participants to spend a full year (traditionally between years two and three of medical school) conducting research and working with a research faculty mentor. Selected students may choose a second research year for the M.D./M.S. degree. A tuition scholarship and stipend are awarded to all students who matriculate into the Research Track. More details are available in the research tracks section of the Student Handbook.
International Health Track
For those interested in a more global perspective of medicine, BCM offers an International Health Track, which is completed within the four years of medical school. More details are available in the International Health Track section of the Student Handbook.
Care for the Underserved Track
In the Care of the Underserved Track, students learn to provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care to the diverse and growing population of patients in underserved settings. Students receive both didactic and hands-on clinical and service-based experiences. Students will have the opportunity to study an area of interest in depth and propose and conduct a research project to help the needs of an underserved population. More details are available in the Care for the Underserved Track section of the Student Handbook.
Geriatrics Track
By the year 2030, 20 percent of the population will be over the age of 65; therefore, there is an increasing need for physicians who are better able to care for older adults. The Geriatrics Track includes lecture series, hands-on experience, and rotations in settings for geriatric patients. In addition, students are encouraged to engage in a research project, with various scholarships available for attendance at a national meeting. More details are available in the Geriatrics Track section of the Student Handbook.
Medical Ethics Track
The Medical Ethics Track consists of three advance electives that are completed within the four years of medical school. The electives explore the competing theories of bioethics through readings and discussions, the clinical practice of medical ethics through clinical sessions about actual cases, and conducting clinical research in medical ethics. More details are available in the Medical Ethics Track section in the Student Handbook.
