Customize your Education: Dual Degree Programs
Two degrees: BCM medical student Joey Nichols, M.P.H., believes that the combined medical and public health degrees can promote health in communities in the United States and around the world. In Colomoncagua, Honduras, Nichols worked last summer to plan a community health needs assessment, where the health status of children will be measured by the height-measuring device he helped build.
Baylor College of Medicine understands that many of today's students are interested in careers that benefit from expertise in two fields of study. In response, the College has partnered with other top-notch institutions to offer our students several dual degree programs.
- M.D./Ph.D. (indicate your interest in this program when applying to the BCM Medical School)
- M.D./M.B.A.
- M.D./M.P.H. (best to apply to BCM Medical School and UT School of Public Health simultaneously)
- M.D./J.D.
M.D./Ph.D. Program
Interested in a biomedical science career with lots of options? There's no better preparation than BCM's Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D./Ph.D. program). BCM is one of only 43 institutions in the nation awarded a competitive Medical Scientist Training Program grant from the National Institutes of Health. The NIH has recognized the quality of our program for more than 30 years.
A special medical school curriculum means you'll get a great medical education in as little as three years. The Ph.D. usually requires another four to five years. There are fantastic research opportunities in BCM's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Bioengineering Program at Rice University, or one of several inter-institutional programs affiliated with seven different institutions.
Learn all about this exciting opportunity by visiting the Medical Scientist Training Program website.

M.D./M.B.A. Program
There is a growing need for professionals who are trained in health care and life sciences management. If you're interested in filling that need, the Baylor/Rice Program in Health Sciences Management (M.D./M.B.A.) should be on your CV.
The five-year program is sponsored jointly by the Jones School of Management at Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine. Students spend the first 2 years at BCM, then 1.5 years at Rice, and another 1.5 years at BCM finishing medical school.
Application to the Jones School of Management can be submitted simultaneously with the medical school application, or students have until April of the second year of the M.D. program to submit their application.

M.D./M.P.H. Program
Got a strong interest in public health issues? BCM has partnered with the University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) to jointly sponsor a five-year M.D./M.P.H. degree program.
Students accepted into the program spend their first three years at BCM. In addition to medical school classes, students will take five online public health classes. The fourth year is spent taking classes at UTSPH. The fifth year, it's back to BCM for the last year of medical school. While at BCM, students will develop a research project that can meet the requirements for both the UTSPH and the Scholarly Project at BCM.
Application to UTSPH can be submitted simultaneously with the medical school application or at the time of interview or acceptance to BCM. Each application will be considered separately and acceptance to one school will not effect acceptance to the other. Students are strongly encouraged to apply to UTSPH before matriculating to BCM to optimize shared credits for classes taken during the first year at BCM. UTSPH has waived the GRE requirement for dual degree applicants.

M.D./J.D. Program
BCM has teamed up with the University of Houston Law Center (UHLC)—to offer a dual M.D./J.D. Program.
If you've got what it takes to earn both of these prestigious degrees, you are encouraged to apply to both schools through the regular admissions processes for each institution (indicate your interest in the M.D./J.D. program on your BCM application). Applicants to the M.D./J.D. Program are required to take the LSAT also.
Program participants can expect to earn both degrees in about six years. The first two years will be spent at BCM, the second two years will be spent studying law full-time at UHLC, and the final two years would be back at BCM finishing medical school, while also taking some legal electives.
