Welcome
to our Med-Peds student corner. We are delighted that you
are considering a career in combined internal medicine-pediatrics.
In June 1967 the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American
Board of Pediatrics approved an integrated program of residency
training in internal medicine and pediatrics. Completion of
a combined medicine-pediatrics program leads to eligibility to take
the certifying examinations of both boards. This idea grew out of
the flexible internships of the 1960's. It was not until the 1980's
however that combined residency training in internal medicine-pediatrics
began to see significant growth and interest. In 1980 there were
four programs with nine positions. One hundred two programs offering
a total of 442 positions entered the 2001 match. Our program
at Baylor College of Medicine graduated its first combined medicine-pediatrics
resident in 1989. Since then we have had a total of 57 residents
complete our program. We currently have 30 residents in our
program and offer 8 first year positions annually through the National
Residency Match Program.
We are delighted to offer an elective in Med-Peds. Click on Student Elective for details.
