Brazos Bend State Park- This 4,897-acre park has 15 miles of hike and mountain bike trails around swampy lakes.
A great place to see your first alligator. Great bird-watching and fishing. The George Observatory is located in the park and is open from 3-10 p.m. on Saturdays. Passes are given out at 5 p.m. for the main dome, which houses a 36-inch telescope. Take US 59 South to Crabb River Road, then follow signs 18 miles to park. (979-553-5101)
Bayou Wildlife Park- A guided tram ride through exotic animal paradise near Dickinson.
Featured is a natural setting with a variety of birds and wildlife on 86 acres. Included is a children's barnyard, giraffe, zebra, rhino, camels, ostrich and alligators. (281-337-6376.)
Cullen Park- 10,534 acres, is one of the largest U.S. municipal parks -- Alkek Velodrome (one of 19 in the U.S.; 7 game fields, hike, bike
and skating trails, picnic areas. Popular area for roller blading.
Directions to Cullen Park for blading or skating
Take I-10 West past Highway 6 and exit Barker-Cypress (exit #748).
Stay on the feeder road to the traffic light; turn right at the light, which is Barker-Cypress, and proceed north exactly one mile to the first traffic light. This is Sarms Road; you will see a soccer field and the Velodrome on your left. Turn left on Sarms Road and drive 0.7 of a mile. You will pass a sign on your left saying Cullen Park West. Proceed west to the Cullen Park West sign on your right and turn right into the park. Stay on the main park road to the end (0.7 miles) and park in the last parking lot.
Hermann Park - Houston Zoological Gardens (Wortham World of Primates, Children's Zoo, Brown Education Center), Houston Garden Center, Museum of Natural History (IMAX Theatre, planetarium), Miller Outdoor Theatre, Japanese Garden, 18-hole golf course, 2 miniature golf courses, paddle boats, hike and bike trail.
Houston Zoo -The Houston Zoological Gardens is home too more than 3,000 animals and features a new $6.7 million Wortham World of Primates. 1513 N. MacGregor (713-523-5888).
Memorial Park
- 1,431 acres; Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, golf course, tennis center, driving range, three-mile jogging trail, playing fields. Also has a mile long, paved road known as the picnic loop which is closed to motor traffic on weeknights after 5 p.m., for the pleasure of cyclists and skaters. The Ho Chi Min Trail is an off-road trail for mountain bikers. Trail conditions are available at phone: 713-468-6824 Ext 2WET.
Mercer Arboretum- A 214-acre facility featuring formal gardens with labeled plants, arboretum tree display area, a picnic area and five miles of garden and nature
trails through the East Texas Piney Woods. Call 281-443-8731.
Sam Houston Park- the City's first park, acquired in 1899 Tours of seven restored historical buildings; Texas Museum, Harris County Heritage
Society.
