HOLIDAYS
A holiday leave will be provided each year. Holiday leave will alternate annually between departments. The Holiday leave will be taken during the
portion of the year that the resident is assigned to the department providing the leave. This is in addition to the vacation time listed below.
VACATIONS
Vacation time is shared equally by both departments.
Year 1
One week of vacation is granted from the pediatric department of the year, and one week from the medicine department. An additional week of leave is given at the completion of the PL-1 year.
Year 2
One week of vacation is granted from the department providing the one four month block, and two weeks from the department providing the two four month blocks.
Year 3
One week of vacation is granted from the department providing the one four month block, and two weeks from the department providing the two four month blocks.
Year 4
One week of vacation is granted from one service and two weeks from the other service
PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS The opportunity to attend an annual professional meeting is given to each resident. Departmental reimbursement for meetings will be as follows:
- The Department of Pediatrics will reimburse the R-1 year.
- During the R-2 and R-3 years each resident will attend one meeting per year reimbursed by the department providing the eight months of training
for that year.
- The Department of Medicine will reimburse the R-4 year.
- The meeting is taken preferably during the portion of the year assigned to the department providing that year's meeting. The meeting must
correspond to the same discipline as the department providing that year's meeting.
- In lieu of attending a professional meeting, the resident can opt for book money.
STIPENDS and FRINGE BENEFITS
Appointments are made to the Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals Residency Program; stipends and fringe benefits are administered through the college including full health and dental insurance. In addition to the stipend from the college, a bonus stipend from Texas Children's Hospital is given.
RESIDENTS' ASSISTANCE GROUP (RAP)
The
Med-Peds residents' assistance group is comprised of all first year
Med-Peds residents and selected upper level Med-Peds resident facilitators. Topics which are not usually addressed during clinical rotations
are discussed in the RAP group. Some of these topics include; tips
for surviving internship , avoiding common medical mistakes, how
to recognize and deal with difficult families, discussing code status,
how to discuss bad news, and tips on how to be a good upper level
resident and leader. Meetings are held monthly during the lunch
hour. This is also an opportunity to see your fellow colleagues
who are rotating on different services.
CHIEF RESIDENT
Each year the faculty steering committee select the chief residents for the combined program. The chief resident's are identified as those individuals who have not only excelled clinically but who also displays strong leadership, communication, humanistic and interpersonal skills. One fourth year and one third year resident will serve as chiefs. The third year chief will go on to serve as fourth year chief the following year. He or she will be responsible for our educational conferences as well as serving as a Med-Peds resident liaison.
ORIENTATION
There is a seperate Med-Peds orientation session given by the director for all incoming residents. In addition, residents will be required to attend all orientation sessions for the service on which they are to start. To the extent that it is possible, residents will be invited to attend orientation of the alternate service.
