Calypso: A Caribbean restaurant with live reggae or steel drum music on Friday and Saturday nights. Music is played outside and you can sit out on the patio. Favorite dishes include coconut-fried shrimp and jerked chicken as well as tropical drinks. 5555 Morningside Drive. (713-524-8571).

Fitzgerald's: Alternative music club located in an old house in the Heights. 2706 White Oak. (713-869-5483).

The Gingerman: This pub in Rice Village is always crowded with folks from the Texas Medical Center.  Darts inside and outdoors seating available.  A popular hangout for residents to go directly from work (you can even wear scrubs). The Gingerman boasts 170 different kinds of beers from all over the world and front and back porches are great for hanging out in nice weather. 56072 Morningside, (713-526-2770)

Griff's Shenanigan's Cafe and Bar: Around St. Patrick's Day this is the place to be, Irish or not.  Irish folk dancers, music, green beer, contests and singing.  3416 Roseland in the Montrose area, (713-528-9912).

Los Andes South American Restaurant: Latin Music. 3700 Richmond, (713)622-2686.

Laff Stop: There are other comedy clubs in Houston, but this is the closest to the Texas Medical Center and usually pulls in good acts. 1952-A West Gray, (713-524-2333).

McGonigel's Mucky Duck: Folk music primarily. Set in a cozy British pub style atmosphere.  British pub food is on the menu. 2425 Norfolk, (713-528-5999).
