Internal Medicine Curriculum


 

MEDICINE CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS

General Medicine Inpatient

 

 

2 months as a PGY-1

 

 

2 months as a PGY-2 or PGY-3 supervisor

 

 

2 months as a PGY-4 supervisor

 

 

 

Emergency Center

 

 

1 month as a PGY-1

 

 

1 month as a PGY-2 or PGY-3 supervisor

 

 

 

Critical Care

 

 

1 month as a PGY-1 in the CCU

 

 

1 month as a PGY-1 in the MICU

 

 

1 month as a PGY-4 in a combined MICU/CCU setting

 

 

 

Medical Subspecialty Electives (includes both inpatient and outpatient electives as well as consult services)

 

 

1 month as a PGY-1

 

 

6 months divided between the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years.

 

 

Electives in internal medicine for block periods include: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Immunology & Allergy, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Oncology, Pulmonary, Rheumatology, and Women's Health.

 

 

 

Geriatrics

 

 

1 month during the PGY-2 or PGY-3 years

 

 

 

Neurology

 

 

1 month during the PGY-2 or PGY-3 years

 

 

 

Ambulatory Care

 

 

1 month as a PGY-2

    1 month as a PGY-3

 

 

2 months as a PGY-4

 

 

The ambulatory care clinic time is to be used for outpatient experiences in internal medicine and its subspecialties, dermatology, gynecology, care of the HIV patient, hospice care, medicine/pediatrics community based practice, office based procedures, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology, psychiatry, sports medicine, and urology.

During your fourth year, one of the two ambulatory rotations will be transition medicine. Residents will rotate through the Baylor Transition Medicine Clinic, Texas Adult Congenital Heart Clinic, Texas Children’s Cancer Center Long Term Survivor Clinic, Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, and others.

 

 

 

Total Estimated Ambulatory Time in  Medicine

Ambulatory time during the 24 months of training in internal medicine is 44 percent, divided as follows:

 

 

Emergency Center, two months 8%

 

 

Ambulatory Block time, four months 17%

 

 

Continuity Clinic 15%

 

 

Subspecialty Clinics during subspecialty assignments 4%
