Med-Peds Curriculum
The combined medicine-pediatrics program is an integrated program comprised of components and experiences derived from the Residency Review Committee Accredited Internal Medicine and Pediatric Residency Programs at the Baylor College of Medicine. The curriculum meets requirements and recommendations for combined training set by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics. The curriculum is reviewed annually and as needed by the director and co-directors. The program integrates 24 months of training in each specialty. The program is integrated by block assignments over four years as outlined in the Cirriculum Overview below. The four years of training provide a total of 12 months of internship (six months in pediatrics and six months in medicine) and 36 months of residency (18 months in pediatrics and 18 months in medicine). The first postgraduate year consists of four alternating three month blocks at the intern level. The second and third years are scheduled in four month blocks. The final year consists of four alternating three month blocks. This schedule allows the resident to spend some summer and winter seasons in each discipline, providing clinical exposure to illnesses with seasonal variation. The frequent alternating blocks keeps residents in touch with both disciplines and relieves some of the apprehension which commonly occurs when switching disciplines.
Call Schedule
Night call at Ben Taub General Hospital and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center averages every fifth night for first-year residents assigned to general medicine. On-call is less frequent for upper level residents.
Night call at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital averages every fifth night for all residents.
Night call at Texas Children's Hospital for residents averages every fourth night.
All residents are scheduled to receive at least every seventh day off and are not required to come to the hospital on that day.
