Faculty (Secondary Appointment)

JUN TERUYA, M.D., D.Sc.

Research Interests:

Dr. Teruya is Assistant Professor of Pathology, Pediatrics, and Medicine. He is Director of Blood Bank and Coagulation and Director of
Pheresis at Texas Children's Hospital.

Dr. Teruya's research interests include: 1. Developing a new assay method for heparin antibodies. With flow cytometry using platelet activation markers such as CD62, CD 41, and CD45, a new method is being investigated to detect patients who have a risk for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia/thrombosis. 2. Whole blood coagulation technology in the assessment of bleeding and thrombosis. Hemostasis is regulated not only by plasma proteins and platelets, but also by cellular components such as neutrophils and red cells. Dr. Teruya is investigating further application of thromboelastography using citrated whole blood for detection of hypercoagulable state in patients with nephrotic syndrome and sickle cell disease. Dr. Teruya's unique strength is his outstanding expertise in clinical coagulation from the Clinical Pathology viewpoint of specialized coagulation testing.
