Faculty (Secondary Appointment)

LAWRENCE RICE, M.D.

Research Interests:

Dr. Lawrence Rice is Professor of Medicine in Hematology and Thrombosis Research. He has been Program Director of Hematology training at Baylor for 17 years, and director of the Hematology/Oncology course required of all sophomore medical students for more than twenty years. He has a very heavy general hematology clinical practice based at the Methodist Hospital where he is the Hematology service chief. He has won numerous awards for teaching excellence and is named in several guides to America's top doctors. His research interests are in thrombocytopenias, particularly heparin-Induced thrombocytopenia, but also thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and immune thrombocytopenia. He also has interests in newly discovered actions of erythropoietin in controlling red cell mass and preventing neocytolysis, the selective hemolysis of young red blood cells, and interests in iron metabolism and anemias.
