Research Program Overview

The Department of Medicine is comprised of 18 sections and centers with active clinical and laboratory research programs. These programs are supported by more than $45 million annually from extramural funding including federal, disease association and pharmaceutical industry sources.

Especially noteworthy are our faculty with NIH program project or center grants in cardiology, endocrinology (2), gastroenterology, hematology/oncology (3), nephrology, pulmonary and thrombosis. Additionally, the Section of Health Services Research holds a VA Center of Excellence award.

Nine investigators currently hold NIH institutional research training grants in the following areas: atherosclerosis and vascular biology, translational breast cancer research, immunology, renal disease, infectious diseases, basic and clinical thrombosis research, molecular medicine, lung disease and cell and gene therapy.

Medicine Administration Pre-Award Research Office

The Department of Medicine's pre-award research office provides faculty guidance in identifying funding opportunities, information to new faculty on identifying pre-award services and exploring research interests, budgetary and administrative review, and communication on research issues. The office handles grant applications for all department of medicine faculty. Our faculty are based at Main Baylor, Baylor Clinic, Faculty Center, Fondren-Brown Building, HCHD, Texas Children's Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, and the VA. Any faculty interested in research should contact Ms. King.

Available services include:

  • Meeting individually to discuss issues/questions related to upcoming grant submissions, and to provide pre-review of budgets and administrative documents prior to routing.

  • Providing guidance, coordination, and budgeting assistance throughout process of preparing large-scale or multidisciplinary grants, such as program projects and training grants.

  • Assisting in customized search to identify potential funding opportunities.

  • Presenting one-on-one "orientations" to new personnel to discuss research-related policies and procedures, grant preparation resources, funding opportunities, and to answer questions.
