Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine
Kalpalatha K. Guntupalli, M.D.
Professor and Chief
Founded in 1947 by Dr. Daniel Jenkins, the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine has enjoyed a long and storied history. Beginning as a pulmonary disease and tuberculosis unit at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas, the section grew with the development of a training program in pulmonary diseases by Dr. Paul Stevens in 1968. With the addition of a critical care medicine training program based at Ben Taub General Hospital in 1985 by Dr. R. Phillip Dellinger, the department continued to grow. In the 1990s, Dr. Joseph R. Rodarte was instrumental in recruiting several key faculty in both the basic science and clinical research realms until his recent untimely death of pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Kalpalatha (Kay) Guntupalli, the current section chief, has followed in Dr. Rodarte's footsteps in continuing departmental growth with the recruitment of several faculty members who have contributed significantly to the field of Pulmonary and Critical Care. Currently, over 30 faculty are involved in clinical and research duties. The division enjoys extensive support from the National Institutes of Health. Division faculty serve on NIH study sections, grant review committees as well as editorial boards. The faculty regularly present papers and abstracts at national and international scientific meetings related to clinical and basic science investigation.
The faculty are based at the four primary teaching hospitals: Ben Taub General Hospital, The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, and The Methodist Hospital. The faculty also attend at Kindred Hospital-Houston, a long-term, acute-care facility.
