Martha P. Mims, M.D., Ph.D., appointed as chief of the Section of Hematology/Oncology
The Department of Medicine is delighted to report that effective Oct. 1, 2009, Dr. Martha P. Mims, associate professor of Medicine (with tenure) and Dan L. Duncan professor, will be appointed as chief of the Section of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine. Her appointment was the culmination of a national search conducted over the course of the past nine months.
Dr. Mims received her undergraduate (B.A.) and graduate (Ph.D.) training at Rice University, and pursued a post-doctoral research experience at BCM in the Division of Atherosclerosis and Lipid Research. She joined the faculty of the Department of Medicine in 1987 and maintained her assistant professor faculty position and an NIH-funded program in lipid research throughout her subsequent medical training at Baylor (M.D., 1998). She completed post-graduate residency training in internal medicine (with an adjunct faculty position) and subspecialty training in hematology and oncology at BCM.
In 2004, she re-joined the faculty of the Department of Medicine as assistant professor in the Section of Hematology/Oncology, and was subsequently promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2006. In 2008, she was honored by her receipt of a Dan L. Duncan Professorship from the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center, where she directs the Clinical Trials Support Unit, and previously served as Co-Leader of the Prostate Cancer Program. Since 2008, Dr. Mims has served as the administrative director of the hematology/oncology unit at the Harris County Ben Taub General Hospital, where she conducts her extensive patient care activities (including her development and direction of a genitourinary oncology multi-disciplinary clinic) and co-chairs the Cancer Committee.
Active in medical education at all levels, she serves as vice chair of the BCM Admissions Committee and as associate director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training program. She has been active in undergraduate curriculum development and provides didactic teaching in the pathophysiology course for medical students. She is a well-respected clinical mentor of medical students, residents, and subspecialty trainees.
Dr. Mims’ scholarly interests are broad ranging from translational laboratory research to identify clinically relevant biomarkers of prostate cancer, to clinical trials research to assess the efficacy of novel therapies for solid tumor and hematologic malignancies. She is the BCM principal investigator of the institutional Southwest Oncology Group award, for which she is a member of the national Genitourinary Oncology Committee). She is a member of multiple professional societies including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, for which she serves as a member of the Taskforce on Disparities in Healthcare.
