Section of Immunology Allergy and Rheumatology
Research Involvement
The Section of Immunology Allergy and Rheumatology is involved in basic and clinical research programs funded through the National Institutes of Health, Department of Veterans Affairs and national research organizations, industry, and endowments. The research programs are an integral part of the Department of Medicine’s Biology of Inflammation Center.
The section is home to six endowed research programs:
- Cullen Chair in Immunology
- The Mendenhall Asthma Research Program
- Trammell Chair in Allergy
- Finger Lupus Center
- Brochstein Arthritis Research Program
- Papadopoulos Autoimmunity Research Program
- Kostas Dermatomyositis Research Program.
Patient Clinical Services
We provide clinical services to patients at Ben Taub General Hospital, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, and the Michael E. Debakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Special clinical expertise is provided for patients with arthritis, musculoskeletal and autoimmune disorders; immunoglobulin deficiency disorders; and allergy, sinusitis, and asthma. Education
The section has major teaching responsibilities for medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows. Section faculty provides core medical student lectureships in the first-year immunology module and the second-year rheumatology module, as well as graduate school immunology courses.
- Annually, 60 internal medicine residents and approximately 30 third- and fourth-year medical students receive training on the Immunology Allergy and Rheumatology services at the affiliated hospitals.
- The section has three ACGME/RRC-approved clinical training programs: Allergy and Immunology, Rheumatology, and Clinical and Laboratory Immunology. Two fellows are accepted each year from approximately 100 applicants into a three-year training program for eligibility to both the Allergy and Immunology and the Rheumatology subspecialty certifying exams. A fourth year of training for eligibility to the certifying exam in Clinical and Laboratory Immunology is available.
