Patient Care

The Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology provides outstanding care specializing in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the gastrointestestinal system and related disorders including:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Peptic ulcer disease
  • GI bleeding
  • Hepatitis and other liver diseases (including liver transplantation)
  • Pancreatic disease, celiac disease and screening for colorectal cancer
  • Special expertise in endoscopic procedures
  • Familial colon cancer patients
  • Therapeutic endoscopy procedure
  • Capsule endoscopy
  • Gastrointestinal motility studies
  • Barrett's Esophagus

Our patients have the opportunity to select their own gastroenterologist within our highly qualified specialists. The physicians work closely with other sub-specialists and surgeons within the college to coordinate the best care for our patients.

Gastroenterology or liver appointments require a referral from your VA Primary Care Physician (PCP). Please contact you VA PCP directly with your gastrointestinal concern. Also, please check your eligibility for VA benefits prior to scheduling an appointment with the GI consult clinic.

The Ben Taub GI Clinic is held every Tuesday afternoon starting at 12:30 p.m. Prior to making an appointment, patients must obtain a referral from a Harris County Hospital District primary care provider, and must provide a valid Harris County Hospital District gold card. There are four eligibility centers that patients can call for gold card information:
