Career in Internal Medicine and Preceptorships

We hope that you will consider Internal Medicine as a career. Student membership in the American College of Physicians (ACP) is worthwhile for those interested in Internal Medicine. Membership is free and gets you a cheap rate on subscriptions to the Annals of Internal Medicine and a variety of useful courses and publications. Call Kay Belnap (790-3217) in Dr. Halevy's office for details.

The Department of Medicine also sponsors two preceptorships for students interested in working with an internist in the community. If you are interested in these two electives which will show you how general internal medicine works as a primary care discipline, please contact Mark Udden's office and speak to Arlene Back (798-6105).

Students must have satisfactorily completed the core clerkship
in internal medicine to qualify as participants.

  1. General Internal Medicine Statewide Preceptorship (450-586A)
Students are invited to participate in this General Internal Medicine Society Statewide Preceptorship-supported elective. Preceptors with voluntary appointments to Texas medical schools are available in communities throughout the state. If the preceptorship is taken outside Harris County a reimbursement of $750 is offered to students who satisfactorily complete the elective. A reimbursement of $1000 is offered to students who work with a preceptor in an underserved rural area. No funds are made available to students taking the elective within Harris County. Staff at GIMSPP in Austin are available to help make arrangements for living quarters in many communities. Students will see patients under the supervision of a general internist and will see ambulatory patients. Some students will follow up on patients admitted to the hospital. Students are asked to maintain a log and will be evaluated by their preceptor. This has been a rewarding and stimulating experience with an emphasis on general internal medicine and primary care.

  2. Ledbetter General Medicine preceptorship (450-534)
As many as 20 scholarships will be awarded annually to second, third, and fourth year medical students at Baylor College of Medicine to study and participate in the private practice of general internal medicine internists (whose residency training was conducted at Baylor) in small cities and towns throughout Texas. These scholarships are provided by the Abbe and Paul Ledbetter Medical Foundation. Supervising physicians are engaged in the practice of general internal medicine, usually outside the Texas Medical Center, and may be located within or outside Harris County. All participating practitioners have been approved to serve as preceptors by the Department of Medicine of Baylor College of Medicine.

If the preceptorship is taked outside Harris County, $750 is provided by the scholarship for the medical student after successful completion of th 4-week preceptorship. Students choosing an underserved rural area will receive $1000. No funds are made available to students taking the elective within Harris County.

Activities of the students follow those of the general internist in the office and at the hospital. Thus, the student sees ambulatory patients, evaluates hospitalized patients, and undertakes consultations under the direction of the general internist. The student will experience the challenges, pleasures, and gratifications of the practice of general internal medicine.
