Cardiology Fellowships: Program Descriptions

The primary mission of the Cardiology Fellowship Program is to train the next generation of leaders in the field of cardiovascular medicine. To this end the clinical training program is comprehensive, and requires a minimum of three years for completion. A fourth year of training is available for certification in cardiovascular subspecialties that require an additional year of training, including interventional cardiology and cardiac transplantation.

First-year clinical rotations include:

The Coronary Care Unit

Non-invasive testing (echocardiography and nuclear cardiology)

Non-invasive testing (treadmill, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology)

Inpatient cardiology consultations (medical, surgical, intensive care unit)

Electrophysiology studies (ECG, ambulatory ECG interpretation)

Cardiac catheterization

The second year of training will be dedicated to complete the core requirements for ABIM eligibility as detailed by COCATS II. One of the hallmarks of the program is that the training in the third year can be individualized and tailored to the fellow's clinical interests. Training in the inpatient setting is enhanced by weekly outpatient continuity clinics under the direct supervision of an attending faculty physician. The trainee is required to follow-up on outpatients with a wide variety of cardiovascular problems over a 36-month period and to track outcomes.
