Training in cardiology requires that all fellows spend a minimum of three years in training, two of which are core clinical rotations as set by COCATS II. The third year rotations include clinical research or further clinical training in the fellow's area of interest in cardiology. Applicants seeking training in interventional cardiology must complete a minimum if 10 months of training in cardiac catheterization prior to interventional fellowship. Applicants seeking training in electrophysiology may elect to spend the third year of training on clinical rotations or research in their field of interest. Applicants seeking to be trained in cardiac transplantation or heart failure may do an additional year on the heart failure/transplant service. For applicants seeking to be certified in echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and CT/MRI may be able to do so during their three years of training in cardiology. However, advanced training is also available.
The clinical training is comprehensive to ensure the fellows' proficiency in all aspects of cardiac care and flexible to enhance the fellows' expertise in their areas of interest. All fellows rotate among the three affiliated hospitals and the BCM Outpatient Clinic, providing an exceptional array of patient populations, pathology, and clinical settings, with a total bed capacity of more than 2000. Fellows are encouraged to become involved in a variety of clinical research projects and established protocols. Below is the core requirement for training in cardiology as set by COCATS II.
