Services

At the Barrett's Esophagus Center, we offer a wide spectrum of services that are part of our comprehensive approach from diagnosis to treatment for patients with Barrett's esophagus. Our patients receive checkups tailored to their needs and based on the latest practice guidelines. We also offer our patients the benefit of enrolling in ongoing clinical trials, as well as regular updates on the latest Barrett's esophagus research.

  • State-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy includes:
    • High resolution Narrow Band Imaging (NBI). This equipment is used by our expert gastroenterologist to more accurately diagnosis Barrett's esophagus, as well as improved ability to identify early cancerous changes (dysplasia) within Barrett's esophagus.
    • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). Endoscopic ultrasound allows the visualization of different layers of the esophageal wall and the accurate delineation of extent of cancer.
    • Endoscopic treatment* of Barrett's esophagus with or without dysplasia or early cancer, including the use of radiofrequency ablation (BARRX) , cryotherapy, and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).

  • Specialized expertise in the histopathological diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus and its possible cancerous changes. This includes the use of specialized stains, biomarkers led by Mamoun Younes, M.D., a world renowned expert in GI pathology.
  • Research investigators at the Barrett's Esophagus Center at Baylor Clinic have more than $2.5 million in federal grants to examine different aspects of Barrett's esophagus. Ongoing research studies include:
    • Role of obesity in Barrett's esophagus
    • Genetic factors in Barrett's esophagus
    • Prevention of cancer in Barrett's esophagus
    • Endoscopic ablation of Barrett's esophagus
  • Surgical and oncological expertise provided by experts at the renowned Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and their cancer treatment expertise.
