Participation in Clinical Trials

With more than 20 ongoing clinical trials, the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention is currently recruiting patients with high cholesterol, high triglycerides, mixed hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, diabetes or peripheral arterial disease.

Research Study Underway For Leg Pain

Do you have poor circulation in your legs causing pain when walking?

If you are at least 40 years old and suffer from blocked leg arteries causing pain brought on by walking (intermittent claudication), you may be eligible to participate in a new research study. The study is being done in the United States and abroad to assess the safety and effectiveness of a new drug to treat intermittent claudication. This study is being conducted at Baylor College of Medicine located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX. Do you have coronary heart disease?

If your doctor has told you that you have coronary heart disease, you may qualify to participate in a clinical research study. The purpose of the study is to find out if an investigational medication is safe and helpful in the management of individuals with coronary heart disease. Only your doctor will know if you qualify.

KOWA Carotid MRI Study: H 24139

Do you have atherosclerosis?

If you are between 18 and 75 years old and suffer from atherosclerosis in your carotid arteries (thickening of the artery walls in your neck), you may be eligible to participate in a new research study This study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a new investigational drug that inhibits the enzyme that converts cholesterol into a form suitable for storage. Participants will receive at no cost:

  • Study-related drugs and procedures
  • Lab and ECG
  • Physical exams
  • Carotid ultrasound (if not recently performed)
  • MRI of your carotid arteries
  • Parking

Abbott Carotid IMT: FIRST Study; H 22665

Physicians at Baylor College of Medicine are conducting a research study to determine whether an investigational new drug that is added to your regular cholesterol medicine, will reduce your risk for heart disease. The study will last approximately 30 months with approximately 13 office visits.

Qualified participants will receive study-related procedures, laboratory tests, office visits, and investigational study medication at no charge. You may also receive compensation for travel. Qualified candidates are:

Men and women are at least 45 years of age or older

Diagnosed with high triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, or "good cholesterol," and one or more of the following:

  • Heart Disease (blockages in arteries of the heart)
  • Peripheral Artery Disease - Blockages in the arteries of the leg or neck
  • Diabetes Type ll
  • Stroke/Mini-Stroke
  • Heart Bypass Surgery
  • Stent/Angioplasty
  • Two of the following risk factors for heart disease: cigarette smoking (within the last month), high blood pressure or on treatment for high blood pressure, family history of premature heart disease, waist circumference males >40 inches; females >35 inches, and age (men 45 years or older; women 55 years or older)
