Xu Liu - April 2007

Xu Liu Xu Liu received the Psychiatry and Behavioral Science Award during the 48th Annual National Student Research Forum held at The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. The award is sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at UTMB and is given to the participant with the most outstanding paper and presentation in the field of psychiatry and behavioral science. Xu also participated in the 29th Annual Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology Graduate Student Symposium at Baylor College of Medicine . Xu gave a platform presentaion of his research and received the Departmental Award for most outstanding research presentation.





Monica Buchanan - July 2006

Monica Buchanan Monica Buchanan was awarded the 2006-2008 Young Investigator Award from the Children's Tumor Foundation for her predoctoral application, "Localization of NF1-Dependent Learning in Drosophila." Founded in 1978 as the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation, the Children's Tumor Foundation (www.ctf.org) is a not-for-profit organization committed to supporting and promoting scientific and medical research that will ultimately lead to the development of therapies for, and innovative approaches to the management of individuals with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) and schwannomatosis. The Children's Tumor Foundation Young Investigator Award is intended to support outstanding young investigators wishing to pursue novel ideas or concepts clearly related to NF1, NF2, or schwannomatosis. The award covers salary for two years, during which it is expected that Young Investigator Award fellows will receive critical research training and be poised to work at the leading edge of their area of research. Monica is a graduate student in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics.

Xu Liu and Bill Krause - November 2005

Xu LiuWilliam Krause At the 17th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium, Xu Liu and Bill Krause were recognized for their academic and research achievements. Xu Liu received the 1st place Milton Gregory Poster Award for the poster he presented summarizing his research project, which is to study the role of the GABA receptor RDL in Drosophila olfactory associative learning. Bill Krause received the 2nd place Milton Gregory Poster Award for the poster he presented summarizing his research project, which is to map the responses of mushroom bodies to odors using fluorescent indicators by confocal microscopy. These awards, which are supported by the Milton Gregory Endowment, are given to honor outstanding research by graduate students. Xu Liu also received the 2005 Tylenol Scholarship in recognition of his past academic achievements and his leadership among fellow students. Tylenol awards $250,000 annually in scholarships to outstanding students pursuing health-related careers.
